TARIFF REVISION
Views of Importers
The desirability of a revision of the Australian tariff agreement was discussed at a meeting of the council of the Wellington Importers’ Association last week.
The president, Mr. Edwin Salmond, remarked that the association had urged a review of these tariffs for some time. The question had been brought under the notice of the Government and representations made that action should be taken at a later date.
Mr. Salmond advised that at an interview with the authorities he had been assured that the Government was giving the matter serious consideration and it was hoped that something in the direction desired would be effected in the near future. Another matter which had been raised by the association was the question of the advisability of adopting the par rate of conversion for duty purposes. Various representations had been made to the Government, but an official reply had been received from the Government regretting that in the meantime the suggestion could not be adopted. This question, hovever, was not being lost sight of, although the Government could not see its way to grant the association’s request.
