VICE-REGAL VISIT

The Royal Show PALMERSTON ITINERARY. Palmerston North, Oct. 29. His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, accompanied by the Lady Bledisloe, will visit Palmerston North on Tuesday and Wednesday. . The Vice-Regal party will arrive at midday on Tuesday. His Excellency will be the guest of the Palmerston North Citizens’ Lunch Club, and will deliver an address, while her Excellency will be the guest of the Business Girls’ Club. During the afternoon an informal visit .vill be made to the showgrounds, and their Excellencies will be the guests of the Palmerston North Operatic Society at its production of “The Girls of Gottenburg” in the evening. His Excellency will officially open the Royal Show at noon on Wednesday, after which he will attend the official luncheon to be given by the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association to visitors to the show.

TENNIS SEASON

Masterton Club Opens Masterton, Oct. 30. About 150 tennis players, including many visitors from various local clubs, attended the opening of the Memorial Lawn Tennis Club’s courts for the season yesterday afternoon. The president, Mr. J. Jameson, in declaring the courts open for the season, welcomed all new members and visitors, and expressed the hope that they would all eujoy a very successful season. He said that yyith a greatly increased membership the club should make good progress during the season. The first ball was then driven over the net by Mrs. Jameson. A start was made with a combined doubles Yankee tournament, but before much progress had been made with the games rain began to fall, and the weather continued showery during the remainder of the afternoon, causing the abandonment of the tournament.

MARTON HARRIERS

End-of-Season Activities Marton, Oct. 29. By way of winding up a most successful first season, the Marton harriers, along with some competitors from Wanganui, held a race from Bulls to Marton to-day, a distance of about 10 miles. Wintry conditions prevailed, but nevertheless good times were recorded. Results are as follow: Bourgeois, Wanganui (2min. 20scc.), 1, time 55Imin.; Mackay, Marton (1 Ulmin.), 2, time 56J rain.; Loveridge, Marton (9Jmin.), 2, time 57min.; Ledingham, Marton (14 min.), 4; Weller, Wanganui (scr.), 4; Robertson. Marton (4miu. 15sec.), 6; Anderson, Wanganui (14rain.). 7: Gorrie, Marton (smin. 45sec.). S; Hegglun. Marton (Simin.), 9. Weller put up fastest time, his actual running time being 57 min. The Marton harriers held an end-of-season dance in the Druids’ Hall tonight at which Wanganui visitors were entertained. Trophies won during the season were presented by the president, H.. Y. Cameron, as follow:—Sealed handicap race: E. Hegglun. Open handicap :D. A. Loveridge. Club championship: D. Smith. Teams’ race: D. Smith, Loveridge, Gordon. Hegglun. Windleburn. Todd points cup: G. Robertson.
