UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S CLUB

"Great Men of England” Last. Thursday the rooms? of the University Women’s Club, Woodward Street, were filled to capacity to do honour to Miss Dora West, 0.8. E., the guest of the evening. Miss Bathan, president, welcomed Miss Whst. Miss’West chose as her subject “Personalities and Powers,” sketching the careers of the greatest men of England. She instanced how- human and approachable the greatest were. She likened Lloyd George to a human dynamo—one who exhausted all he came in contact with and who knew how to get the last ounce out of‘any man. One very vivid picture of’his force was when he addressed 10.000 hostile colliers and their wives. For a whole hour he spoke, and at the end of that time he had won all hearts. Where Kitchener failed with the masses he dominated. The speaker dealt with Hie meteoric rise to fame of Lord Birkenhead, P. Snowden and J. H. Thomas. In answer to questions, Miss West outlined briefly the chief characteristics of the women members of Parliament, and impressed on her bearers that the road to political success was a hard and stony one. In conclusion, the speaker said: “Man docs not live by bread alone, and until we seek the spiritual side of life and not the material the great, problems of the world cannot be solved.” Mrs. Sommerville, vicc-presideut, extended a hearty vote of thanks to the sneaker.
