AMATEUR ATHLETICS Lower Hutt Club’s Report Summarising the activities of the Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club for the past year, the annual report states that the membership now stands at 95, of which 36 are active members.. For the previous season the membership was 127, which included 65 active members. During the year twelve new members were elected. During the first part of the season a new system of evening meetings was given a trial, continues the report, such meetings being held alternately at Petone and Lower Hutt, and being under the control of the respective clubs. This did not prove of any special benefit to club members, and in the second half of the season the old. system was reverted to, the club holding meetings each Monday evening when the weather was suitable. As previously, no trophies were given at these meetings, but points were awarded for the club cups. The weather conditions, were not of the best on several occasions, and the “fields” were rather disappointing, particularly in the early part of the season. Due to adverse circumstances!, no afternoon sports meetings or open evening meetings were held. It was regretted that the women did not have an opportunity of competing for the “Riddiford Cup” during the season, and it was suggested that an endeavour be made to hold an early contest for ike cup. The club entered several teams in the Dewar Shield contests conducted -by the Wellington centre, but did. not gain any great measure of success. A team was also selected to represent the club in the provincial championships, and congratulations were extended to Mr. R. Griffiths on, coming first in the javelin event and third- in the discus. The various cups held by the club for competition among members were won as follow:—James Cup (women’s event), J. Kench; Horman Cup (junior event), J. Mair; Matthews Cup (sfprint event, senior), J. F. Phillips;- Strand Cup, (over 440 yards), D. Auld; Purdy Cup (field events), R. Griffiths; Fraser Cup (cycling), L. .Hall; Treseder Cup (Hutt Rugby. Football Club members), W. H. Roberts. . The club’s thanks were extended to Messrs. W. Nash, M.P., C. R. Barrett. E. P. Bunny, H. P. Kidsbn. H. Vagg, Roberts, sen., and J. W. McHolm. LAWN TENNIS CLUB Situated with a bowling green on one side and a croquet green on the other, the Petone Central Lawn Tennis Club provides facilities for all classes of sport. The membership of the club for which playing facilities can -be provided at present, is at full strength, and a waiting list of prospective members has been prepared until further courts can be made available. The levelling of the ground for the hard courts has been completed, and the settling

of the ground is progressing favourably., with the result that the asphalt should be laid shortly. Through the energies of Sir. Campbell, the grounds superintendent, and the greenkceper, a vast improvement is noticeable ou the grass courts.
