FORM OF THE WINNERS

Light on Melbourne Cup Result (By ‘•The Watcher.”) The Victoria Derby ou Saturday appears to have resulted in a very decisive win for Liberal. The New Zealander Gaine Carrington secured a good consolation prize in- SOO sovs. for second, but so far as beating the winner was concerned it is clear he was not good enough. His chances on this form of staying the two miles of the Melbourne, Cup do not look bright. Blixten, the Night Raid colt in the. stable of G. Price; who ran unluckily in the Breeders' Plate at Randwick, was confidently expected in the Marybyrnong Plate, but he could only run second. The winner is out of Ji sister to Biplane, a good three-year-old and Derby winner trained by the late R. J. Mason. His sire Curialis is a young horse by Splon Kop (winner of the 1920 Derby and son of Spearmint, also sire of the 1930 Derby winner Felstead). from Curia. ' by Cicero from the famous Sceptre. G. Price also confidently expected Havering in the Hotham Handicap, but he finished just out of a place. Roe, the winner of that race, was bred by his owner. Mr. E. E. D. Clarke, and is trained by veteran J. Scohie. As a two-year-old he promised well, but, his form since has been no good, ns shown by his position in the handicaps. His return to form, as the cable states, was totally unexpected, so it shows what the form horses arc sometimes up against in racing. Perintlnis. who ran second, is a halfbrother to Heroic, and the third horse, Yarramba, is trained by Stan Reid, who, by the way. confidently expects this Moonee Valley Cup winner to be hard to beat in the Melbourne Cup to-morrow, Peter Pan’s performance in the Melbourne Stakes enhances his prospects in the Melbourne Cup. Rogilla races consistently. and Middle Watch, joint favourite for the Cup with Peter Pan, will have satisfied his supporters. The third horse in the Melbourne Stakes has a wonderful winning record in the Cup. Denis Boy has involved himself in a double penalty now. and he will be a good horse to win with 9.2.
