GOODS RECOVERED

Big Hauls of Stock Taken to Police Station PROPERTY WORTH £4OO Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, Oct. 29. A motor-truck laden with enough general merchandise to stock a country store was backed into the Central Police Station on Thursday afternoon, and yesterday a cartload of clothing arrived at the station. All of this stock is for identification purposes in connection witli theft charges, and its value runs into over £409. Over tlie possession of this material four men are held by the police, two being arrested on Thursday, and two more yesterday, though there is no connection between the pairs. The load in the truck, covering a vast variety of goods, is probably the bulkiest and most costly which has had to be housed by the police here. The detectives and police have made several important arrests in the past month or two, and the skill, initiative, and patience shown by Chief-Detective J. Carroll and his staff have been outstanding. There has been a good deal of crime in the past six months, and in most instances the criminal has several hours’ start of the police.

Detectives and uniformed police have been up against unusual circumstances which have called for methods of » special nature.
