COLLEGE BOXING

Tourney at St. Patrick’s SOME VIGOROUS BOUTS The hall at St. Patrick’s College, Cambridge Terrace, was crowded last evening when the finals of the annual boxing tournament were decided. An excellent ring was set up in the middle of the hall and some interesting contests were witnessed. In all, eleven bouts were fought and the boys showed skill and stamina worthy of their instructors. The preliminary bouts were decided on Wednesday last. Father Cullen, Rector of Sr. Patrick s, in the course of a short speech, thanked the officials of the Wellington Boxing Association for their help. He added that at the present time there was a great deal of feeling that sport was taking too large a part in college life, but when one saw the moral and mental results of sport he thought that such an attitude was wrong. The following are the results of the : Beasley (5.8) beat Merivale (5.4). Beasley was more aggressive in the last round,, and scored freely with Lightweight B: King (8.1) beat Plimmer (8.4). A lively; bouk with Phmmer forcing the pace, but King landed harder blows. Bantamweight: Newsome (7.7) beat Foley (7.2). The fight was fairly even in the first two rounds, but Newsome came to life in the final, and easily outP °Lrthtwe°igM A: Stellin (S.S) beat Barns (8.6). A very even bout throughout, with Stellin a little supe™* “ last round. Burns was unlucky.to lose. Mosquitoweight: Roche (6.3) beat Mu Naughton (6.3). Three rounds of fireworks from these youngsters were much appreciated by the audience. Roche, however, was a little superior after an even Black (8.11) beat Thurston (8.12). An even contest with both landing good Wows. Flyweight: Crawford (7.0) beat Crox ford (7.3). Crawford’s longer reach enabled him to win easily, though Croxford was the more aggressive. Afi a result ot this fight Crawford won the medal presented by the Wellington Boxmg Association for the most scientific boxer of the tournament. . t Middleweight: Quirke (9-) beat Lonergan (9.0). Quirke scored freely in the firrt round, and had things alll his own way in the second. Lonergan was ta ? ing severe punishment gamely when tlx. fiS Duffy (8.0) beat Darragh (8.3). Duffy- 'though light, forced the pace in the final rounds, and scored 3 B: Aylett (6.3) beat Spurway (6.2). Aylett was superior m height and reach, but Spurway put up a Sa H e McDermott (10.4) beat Dennehy (11-5). McDermott was in better condition: both boys landed hard blows. McDermott was more aggressive in the second and start of the final round, but both tired greatly toward the end. A M»srs7 Guise and SommervUle ably acted as judges for the.finals, and Mr. N ed Perry filled the position of referee with credit.
