Words in Parliament
Sir, —I have already indicated the distance of the speeches made in the first session of this year. In Hansards’ columns the distance was 785 yards, and in lines on end 8 miles 50 yards. I desire to supplement this information by giving the approximate number of words spoken during the session, viz., 1,833,034. It would be too great a task to allot to each member the words he uttered, I therefore average them. Some members may not be pleased at this; others may be overjoyed. Let me view the finansial aspect of that question. I believe that each word has cost the country at least twopence, making a total of £15,275 ss. Bd.—that I believe to be less than the actual cost of Hansard. The average per member works out to a fair number of 2:2,912. I ask members to consider seriously that idle and useless words are just as expensive as those of value I am, etc., —E. BEZAR. Wgton., Oct. 25.
