FIRE IN SPEED CAR
Some Theories & Opinions LIBEL CLAIM EVIDENCE (Rec. October 27, 9.50 p.m.) Sydney, Oct. 27. Giving evidence in Mr. Norman (“Wizard”) Smith’s libel suit against “Smith’s Weekly,” Mr. Donald Harkness furnished theories concerning the cause of the fire in Mr. Smith’s car, but said that the only conclusion he had formed was that some foreign substance had caused it. A fire could be deliberately caused with a petrol-soaked rag, and with the engine running there would be no difficulty in picking up a spark and igniting the rag. Mr. Norman Josephson, consulting engineer, said that it was not possible to cause a fire in the manner suggested by the plaintiff. Witness expressed the opinion that a fire could be caused by loosening a clip of the petrol supply pipe, allowng petrol to ooze out slowly and igniting by a spark from one of the plugs.
