FREEZING DISPUTE

Free Labour Still at Work WAINGAWA MEAT WORKS Dominion Special Service. Masterton, Oct. 26. There is no change in the position at Thos. Borthwick and Sons’ Waingawa works. Killing operations are still being carried out with free labour, and the union slaughtermen are still refusing to accept work on the terms offered by the employers. Sixteen free labour slaughtermen are engaged at the works at present, and are stated to be giving the company every satisfaction. More labourers than can be absorbed in the meantime are offering their services. The season is not yet in full swing and the men at present engaged are able to deal with the stock coming forward. It is, however, anticipated that the works will be fairly busy in about a fortnight’s time. Peaceful picketing continues, but no attempt is being made to interfere with any men approaching the works. FREE LABOUR AT WAITARA Work Recommenced Yesterday By Telegraph—Press Association. New Plymouth, Oct. 25. The Waitara freezing works recommenced to-day with free labour. Arrangements have been made whereby all classes of stock will be dealt with, and buyers have been instructed to operate. A union meeting decided to instruct the National Council to withdraw the safety men on the Commencement of work with free labour, but the management will be able to effect a replacement to-morrow. The union president stated that the determination of the men was stronger than ever not to return.
