CRIMES BY MAORIS
Lawlessness in Hokianga CAUSING POLICE CONCERN By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, September 5. The prevalence of crime among the Maoris, particularly in North Auckland, was the subject of comment by Mr. Justice Herdman when sentencing several prisoners to-day. He said that there had been an exceptionally large number of cases from the Hokianga district, where lawlessness among the young Natives had caused the police much concern. Kaari Smith, aged 39, was sentenced to two years’ reformative detention, and Robert Harris, aged 23, to twelve months’ imprisonment, for breaking and entering the Post Office and stealing property worth £123. It was stated that the Post Office safe had been removed to a motor-car and driven 40 miles. It had been opened with explosives by a number of Maoris. His Honour said that he thought he had imposed deterrent sentences in cases from Hokianga, but unfortunately it appeared that they had not had the desired effect.
