BRIGHT SPOTS IN THE NEWS

There was a heavy turnover of stocks and shares in the four main centres of the Dominion yesterday, prices in a number of cases showing further advances. The Sydney and Melbourne share markets were again very active and firni.

With keen general competition and improved Japanese activity, the Sydney wool sales yesteiuay showed all the best features of the opening sales last week. Prices frequently showed an advance of 5 per cent, on the closing rates of last week.

A buoyant and optimistic feeling in the British wool market is reported by the representative in England of Australian woolgrowers.

The outlook in Britain for New Zealand butter appears brighter than for some time past. The market is firmer, due to increased Danish supplies going to Germany.

The outcome of the Ottawa Conference and the more confident tone evident in England in industry and on the Stock Exchange justify in some measure the hope of more prosperous times before very long, remarked the chairman of the Standard Insurance Company at the annual meeting in Dunedin yesterday.

Improved business is being reported by firms associated with tbe building trade, in which there is definite improvement, according to Mr. A Seed, president of the Allied Building Industries organisation.

An early settlement between the Government and the State coal miners is expected as the result of a conference yesterday between the Minister of Mines and the union representatives. Certain of the Government’s proposals were hi dispute.
