STREET MEETINGS

Youth-for-Youth Campaign DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL Applications were received by the finance committee of the City Council last evening for permission for the “Youth for Youth” movement to hold street meetings on Friday evening and Friday week. The promoters of the movement wanted to use Garrett Street as one of the stands, and they had interviewed the residents of that street, who had no objection. The Wellington Labour Representation Committee also applied for a general permit to hold street meetings. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said that the Police Commissioner objected to the holding of street meetings at the present time. Personally Mr. Hislop saw no objection to the Christian Youth Council, as there was no risk of any disturbance in that connection, and he moved that a permit be granted for the two Fridays mentioned. Councillor H. A. Huggins said that the council had already decided that no meetings were to be held in Garrett Street. According to the report the residents objected to any meetings, particularly to religious bodies. “Well,” said the Mayor, “our reports differ. We have it from the traffic department that the residents had given their consent.” “And the next week the residents object,” said Councillor J. N. Wallace. Councillor R. McKeen said he did not object to the Christian Youth movement or any other body holding street meetings, but at the same time he could not see why the Labour Representation Committee should not be allowed to hold its meetings, at which there had never been any disturbances. The Youth for Youth movement was granted the required permission to hold its meetings. On the motion of Councillor R. McKeen it was agreed to allow the Labour Party’s application to a future meeting on the understanding, that Mr. McKeen and Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., had seen the Commissioner of Police upon the matter.
