Foundry Trade. Brighter NORTH ISLAND ORDERS Dunedin Firms Heartened “DISTINCT SIGNS” NOTICED Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, August 15. Distinct signs of an improvement in the foundry trade are reported by Otago ironmasters trading with the North Island. An ironmaster and a brassinaster, who have returned from extended business visits to the North Island both report that in the ' Taranaki and Auckland districts the tone is most optimistic, and business is once again starting on a mild boom, the cause of the revival . being attributed to the return from dairy . produce. “There is no boom yet, but all firms are a little busier than they have been during the past year,” stated Mr. D. C. Cameron, manager of Reid and Gray, Burnside, and president of the Otago Ironmasters’ Federation. “The prospects are better than they were two or three months ago, and although a few additional employees are being engaged most of the foundries are working longer hours. The general engineering trade is in the same posltl°Mr. J. B. Shacklock, of H. E.' Shacklock and Co., also confirmed the reports of a slight improvement in the Industry. Seven additional employees have been taken on by Methven and Company during the past month, increased orders from the North Island being responsible for the happy turn North Island, said Mr. Henry Brown, various trades show revival. Most of the orders were coming from Auckland and Wellington, but construction was also progressing m Hawke’s Bay. There was every evidence of flourishing conditions in Taranaki, where the farmers had received their cheques for the dairy season and were spending freely on improving their homes and farms. A generally more optimistic feeling in the North Island was also reported by Mr. Garrett, general manager for A. and T. Burt Ltd., Industry in Auckland and Taranaki was distinctly brighter due to the revenue from butterfat production, but Wellington was not showing any considerable improvement.
