DRAMATIST’S DEATH
Mr Ronald Mackenzie’s Fate Author of “musical CHAIRS” Nothing much is known of Mr. Ronald Mackenzie, the British playwright, who is reported as having been killed in a motor-car accident near Beauvais, France, except that he is the author of the play “Musical Chairs.” The play, which has been running at the London Criterion since April 2, has turned out to be a distinct success. James Agate, a well accredited London critic, said that it was the best first play turned out by a British playwright for forty years. This does not mean so very much after all, as first plays do not, as a rule, reach a very high standard. As in most' other professions, the playwright must serve his apprenticeship and build successful plays out of the ashes of his failures. “Musical Chairs” is a serious play with lucid intervals. It describes very frankly the selfish greed of a woman battening on the disillusionment of a man. It has a violent end.
