KAWARAU’S GOLD

Second Dam Likely to be Built VISITOR’S OPTIMISM Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, August 15. Mr. Herbert Credglnton, formerly of Otago, and now of Melbourne, who is visiting Dunedin, and who represents the Australian shareholders in the Kawarau Company, states that they are very anxious to increase their present holding of 25 per cent, of the scrip. The visitor also made an interesting announcement in respect to the erection of a second dam. “Another dam is now to be built,” said Mr. Credglnton, who is a director of the reorganised Kawarau Company. “Professor Hornell assures ns that it will hold up the water for any desired period from two to three months, according to the weather, and it is up to us, seeing that the water can be lowered, to conceive some idea as to working the bed of the river. Our present proposition is to concentrate on the bed in sections. By that method experience will teach us something every year, and as Kawarau will likely provide fifty years of mining, the accumulated experience should serve as a direct guide to the body of the gold, “Everybody who gives the matter a thought must be of opinion that the gold-winning on the Kawarau since the closing of the gates is much greater than disclosed,” said Mr. Credginton. “A reasonable estimate of the total would be from 600 to 1000 ounces, and what has been won is from 'the banks of the Kawarau, not from the Shotover or Molyneux. Remember, too, that the ground worked since the unemployed were granted permission is not virgin ground, but crevices that were mined by miners of the ’seventies and ’eighties.” The directors and the engineers are to meet next week on the river banks and decide as to a suitable site for the new dam.
