A CORNER FIREPLACE I F.H., Wairoa, writes: "I wish to build a corner tireplace to burn mainly wood in an inside coiner in a brick house, but wish it to occupy as little floor space as possible. I would appreciate any suggestions with regard to dimensions* Is it. possible to use the actual walls as part of the flue? Would it be possible or advisable to use C-inch concrete drain pipes for a flue from the gathering through the roof? A bricklayer tells me that a corner tire would project about 0 feet into the room, but I would like to coniine it if possible to extending 3 feet on each wall.” Your first question cannot be answered definitely in the absence of fuller information as to the nature of the walls. The proposal is feasible only if the walls are sufficiently thick or properly insulated. The estimate as to the extent of projection into the room seems faulty. A fireplace with an opening of two feet three inches would project approximately a similar distance from the corner. Of course the floor Would have to be cut away and a concrete hearth laid, which woulil add to the total floor-space occupied. 11l answer to your second question, a nine-inch fireclay or pumice concrete flue liner, cased in with concrete, is recommended.
