NATIONAL COUNCIL

International Efforts The monthly meeting of the Wellington branch of the National Council of Women was well attended, Mrs. Edgar Suckling being in the chair. Mrs. Suckling reported that a deputation from the council had waited on the Justices’ Association recently in order to present the views of the council in connection with women police. The deputation had been most courteously received by the justices, who expressed themselves most interested in the information presented to them and promised to go into the matter further.

Mr. Roberts addressed the meeting, giving an account of his visit to Geneva as a delegate to the International Labour Conference. He was most interesting in connection with the working of the conference, and gave much information as to the results achieved, especially in the reduction of the. working hours for women and children in Eastern countries and the removal of what had amounted to practically slavery in parts of West Africa. He pointed out that it was in such work as this that so much of the value of the League, of Nations lay, as it was only on an international basis that many of the problems connected with labour conditions could be met. He appealed for the support of the league by New Zealand women. After some discussion of problems connected with labour and unemployment a hearty vote of thanks was proposed by Miss England and carried by acclamation.
