BETTINGTON WINS

New South Wales Amateur Golf Title SENSATIONAL PLAY’ (Rec. June 26, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, June 25. Bettington played faultless golf in the final of the New South Wales amateur championship to defeat Dobson 7 up and 5 in the presence of 4000 people. The game started ‘sensationally. Dobson was on the green with a great tee shot, and sank a 20-footer for an eagle 2to Bettington’s birdie. Bettington won the second, Dobson the fourth, Bettington the fifth, Dobson the sixth, Bettington the ninth, where the match ■was all-square. Bettington took the lead for the first time at the tenth, but Dobson made the game all square again at the twelfth with a birdie 3. The fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth were won by Bettington, who was leading 3 up at the end of the first eighteen holes. The approximate strokes for the round were Bettington 77, Dobson 81. Over the second nine of the morning round a strong wind made play difficult. The only really bad hole, how.ever, was a par 5 at the sixteenth, which Bettington gained, six to seven. The nineteenth was halved in birdie threes, the twentieth in par fours, the twenty-first in par threes, and the twenty-second in par fours. Dobson 'pushed his second in . a bunker at the next and Bettington went to 4 up. He Increased his lead to 5 up at the twenty-fifth with a birdie 4. Another birdie at the next made Bettington 6 up. The twenty-seventh was halved in par fours. At this stage Bet- ' tlngton's figures read 3,4, 3,4, 4,3, 4,3, 4—32, three under par. Dobson’s figures were 3,4, 3,4, 5,3, 5,4,. 4—35. ‘ Despite the fact that. Dobson went out in. par figures, he failed to win a hole; on the contrary he found himself fighting often for a half. The twenty-eighth was halved. Dobson laid his opponent a stymie at the next and won the hole 4/5. Two visits to, the bunkers by Dobson at the thirtieth gave Bettington a win to make him dormie 6. Dobson failed to get out of a pot at the thirty-first, and Bettington, still playing with deadly accuracy, won the hole and the match, 7 up and 5 to play. AMERICAN OPEN TITLE Phenomenal Last-round Score GENE SARAZEN’S TRIUMPH (Rec. June 26, 5.5 p.m.) v New York, June 25. With a phenomenal last-round score Of 66, Gene Sarazep won the open golf championship with a score of 286. Cruickshank also rallied at the finish to tie with Perkins for second, with 289 each. Diegel scored 294, Cox 295, Dutra. Jurado, Cooper and Burke each 297, Hagen 298. Kirkwood was far behind with 304. Sarazen’s score has only been equalled once in 36 years of open championship history.
