PRICE OE GAS No Reduction Yet REPLY TO RATEPAYERS A request from the Moera Ratepayers’ League asking if the hoard could reduce the price of gas was received at the meeting of the I’etone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board. The board intimated that a substantial reduction had 61*011 made last year, and, although a reduction would be made when possible, the time was not yet opportune. That coke should be made available to them at a cheaper rate than the casual buyer, was the request of a deputation representing the Lower Hutt retail coal dealers. At present the cost was the same to each. The board decided that no concession could be made at present, but the matter would be considered with the estimates. In his report for March the works manager, Mr. C. Shaw, stated that 10,074,000 cubic feet of gas had been manufactured, giving an average make per ton of 15,914 cubic feet. Coal carbonised amounted to 633 tons 3 cwt. The average calorific value of the gas was 464 B.Th.U., and 110,000 cubic feet less gas was made than in March, 1931. Coal in stock on April 1, 1932, was estimated at 563 tons, tar at 57014 gallons, and coke at 4334 tons. The distribution officer, Mr. O. Silbery. reported that in March, 9 new services. 10 cookers, 1 cnliphont, 1 water heater, aud 3 hot plates were installed. • w . PLUNKET SOCIETY Upper Hutt Branch Meeting There was a full attendance of committee members at the monthly meeting of the Upper Hutt branch of the Blanket Society. The nurse’s report showed that there were 8 new cases, and 187 visits to the Upper Hutt rooms. Visits to outstations amounted to 107. The general health of the district was good. Clothing and vegetables were received aud distributed by the nurse among needy cases. Flowers were donated by Mesdames Nicol, Perham, Hopkirk, Emmett and Collins. .Mrs. O’Connor having left the district, her resignation was received with regret. Regret was also expressed that Miss Sharpe, who has been in charge of the Upper Hutt area for over two years, is transferred to the South Island. Subscriptions of 5/- were received during the month from Mesdames Hopkirk, Perham. E. Campbell, Hanron, Kitson, and S. D. Rogers.
