Interest ill sport is very keext among tbe ollle£.r,s aud men of H.M.S. Diomede, and when tbe cruiser is in port they lose no opportunity in arranging contests. Even fencing has its exponents, and yesterday a team met men from the Federal liner Cornwall in tbe Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve headquarters. After some exciting contests the Cornwall’s team won by 17 lights to 10, all. the sabre bouts being won by Mr. Ramsdale, physical instructor of the Cornwall, while Petty Officer Canty won all his bouts with the epee. The bouts with foils were wou by the Cornwall’s team. During the afternoon the Diomede s officers beat the United Services Club in a golf tournament by one match. A Soccer match, Diomede v The Sloops, ended in a draw, each team scoring one goal.
The Rugby match played between cadets from the Cornwall and a junior team from the Diomede on Tuesday was won by the Cornwall, B—6. Yesterday afternoon the Cornwall s cadets met the senior Scots College fifteen on the college grounds, the school winning by 6 points to 3 after a hard, even game. Cadets from the Cornwall have played the Scots College team for several years past when they have been in port, but have not. yet succeeded in defeating the colIpcrp tpnni. At 11 a.m. to-day a boat race will take place between cadets from the Cornwall and a crew from H.M.S. Veronica The course will be from Clyde Quay XX'harf to the Glasgow XVharf, the boats being five-oared service whalers. The race is expected to be a very keenly-contested one bechuso while at: Lyttelton the Veronica’s crack crew defeated tbe cadets from both the Cornwall ami the Northumberland. The stroke of the Cornwall’s team was unable to row In that contest, but as be will bo stroking the Cornwall’s boat to-day. tlffi cadets arc eager to wipe out tbeir deteat at Lyttelton.
