ANOTHER RELIEF CAMP

Makowhai Drainage Scheme CONDITIONS AGREED TO Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, April 13. The Manawatu County Council has received a letter from the Public Works Department stating that on certain conditions there is every possibility of the Unemployment Board meeting the total cost of setting up and maintaining a single men’s relief camp to undertake the Makowhai drainage scheme. These conditions are: That the men should be obtained from the Wellington Labour Unemployment Bureau; that the council pass a resolution agreeing to either the formation of a drainage board or the levying of a special rate over the properties concerned, and to undertake to adequately maintain the drains when constructed; that the council should definitely state to what extent it was prepared to assist in the provision of materials for culverts, over-bridge, etc., for which no funds would be available from the Unemployment Board. ,

A petition declaring the area to benefit under the proposed drainage works to be a district for the purpose of the construction of the drainage works, and setting out the boundaries of the land to be included in the special district, was presented to yesterday’s meeting of the council when the resolution required by the Public Works Department was passed. This decision and other information sought by the department is to be forwarded immediately in order that the commencement of the work will be expedited.
