FIRST REGULAR VISIT

Steamer Zealandia Arrives RELIEVING ULIMAROA Paying her second visit to Wellington and her first in the regular intercolonial passenger service, the Hud-dart-l’arker steamer Zealandia arrived in the stream at Wellington at 7.30 a.m. yesterday from Sydney and berthed later at No. .1 south Queen’s Wharf. The Zealandia’s last visit here was in 1916. when as a troopship she called at Wellington en route from Australia to the Panama Canal. She is now relieving the Ulinuiroa while that vessel is laid up at Sydney for an extensive overhaul and survey, which will occupy about three months. Built in 1910 by John Brown and Co., Clydebank, the Zealandia is very similar to the Ulimaroa. being a larger and improved edition of that vessel. She has a gross tonnage of 6683 compared with the Ulimaroa’s 5828, and is a faster ship. On this trip she experienced southerly weather, but had no difficulty in arriving on time. The Zealandia was first engaged in the Canadian-Australian service, and in that run visited Auckland a number of times. In 1913 she was transferred to the West Australian service, and with the exception of the w.ar years, when she was trooping. has since then been engaged cither in that run or in the Sydney-Hobart service. Captain W. ,1. Wyllie. who has been in command of the Ulimaroa for the past 25 years, is in command of the Zealandia. whose regular master. Captain R. Darroch, is on holiday leave. Captain Darroch was in command of the Ulimaroa for several trips a few months ago when Captain, Wyllie was on holiday leave.
