DISPUTE OVER RENT

Ex-Tenant Strikes Landlord High words over the payment of rent, by an allercatiou in Ron Street, Miramar, on March 15. resulted in Edward Henry Eagar, a vandriver, being convicted and fined £1 and costs by Mr. E. Page. S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Eagar, who was charged with striking Reginald John Harrison, pleaded not guilty through bis counsel. SeuiorSergeniit licnipsey conducted the ease for the police. Harrison said that on March 14 lie called on Hie Eagars to discuss the pay incut of rent owing by them to him. He was told he would have to wait and, in the end. he was ordered from the bouse. The following day lie met Eagar, who struck him. They grappled, after which witness went for the police. Constable Hollis read a statement in which Eagar admitted striking Harrison. A nlea of provocation was submitted by the defence, Engar and his wife assorting Hint Harrison laid used bad liingiinge at Hieir home. On Hie day of the assault. Eagar said. Harrison was highly excited and bis threatening attitude precipitated the light. “Evidently there was wnrnith of feeling on the previous night, but Ihe defendant docs not deny the '•linliff's evidence as to the striking." said the magistrate in giving decision.
