CONTROL DESIRED
Some Severe Fighting
By Telegraph—Press Assn. — Copyright. Shanghai, April 8.
Further strengthening the belief of the Japanese Intentions to assume control of the Chinese Eastern Railway is a report from Harbin which announces the intention of the new State, Manchukuo, to rename the railway “North Manchurian Railway.” This announcement, following closely Japanese activities along the Chinese Eastern Railway, is believed to indicate a Japanese determination to control all the railways in Manchuria, linking with the South Manchurian Railway.
The Soviet Government, who are joint operators of the C.E.R., have made no statement regarding the latest Japanese move.
In the meantime severe fighting is reported in the Chientao neighbourhood between Japanese expeditionary forces and Chinese, resulting in heavy casualties to the latter.
