EVENING GOWNS
“Mavis.”)
Effective Use of British Materials
(By
London, February 9. Two charming frocks in British materials appeared in one famous designer’s collection recently. The first was carried out in white cotton crepe with a few dashes of red and the other was a beautiful gown in fine white wool with a long train. A coat of the same material, with sleeves cut to a wide point at the elbow and tight metal embroidered cuffs, accompanied the woollen gown. Evening gowns can roughly be divided into two periods—l 932 and 1880. The present day is represented by sweeping satin gowns cut high in the front but often backless. These arc accompanied by delightful scarves of the same material, which arc worn negligently round the shoulders. The eighties were well to the fore, and it was in this group that the cotton and woollen materials were more prevalent. Other materials are not banned, however, and one particularly attractive .1880 model was made from stiff cream faille, which was a favourite to medium. The gown was composed of tier upon tier of flat, flouneings edged with narrow silk fringe, and sweeping round to the back of the frock to form a tiny train.
The friends of Mr. and Mrs. C. K. McLaren, “Arohanuf,” gathered together last Wednesday night to bid their daughter, Miss Flo McKuin, a welcome home after a year’s leave of absence in Auckland Miss McKuin contributed a humorous recitation, “The Seaside Trunk,” and the evening was then spent in dancing. Among those present were: Mesdaines Mitchell, Seivers, N. McLeod, Ronalds, Arcus, J. Sharp, Clarke, Misses Ngairc McLaren, Elsie Fraser and Jean McLeod. .1. Seivers, J. Campbell (Masterton), C. Ronalds, Daphne. McLeod (Martinborough), Dorothy Raymond (Greymouth), Messrs. Seivers, C. Seivers, R. Cavcrhill, R. and I. Nicol, J. M. WiseJoy (Carterton), G. Rigg (Masterton), A.
