Car Struck, Shop Front Demolished TWO GO TO HOSPITAL Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, April 0. Shortly before midnight last night an accident occurred in Church Street, near the Opera House,, when a heavilyladen motor lorry, out of control, after striking the back of a stationary car and knocking several people down, crashed through the front of a confectionery shop. Mrs. Reid, of Church Street, and her son, Mr. J. Reid, were admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital. The front of the shop was completely wrecked. Mrs. Reid is suffering from a wound on the right side of the scalp, superficial cuts and abrasions. Both of the injured persons were reported to be in a satisfactory condition. Miss J. Reid and Mr. T. H. Verry also were Injured, but were able to return to their homes. Mr. Verry received a cut on the leg and a heavy blow on tbe head. .. Mr. Reid’s car was parked near the Opera House, and, as it would not start, Mr. Verry, an Automobile Association patrolman, and Mr. Reid pushed it out from the kerbing. The bonnet of the car had been opened up, and Mr. Verry was holding a torch. The ear was parked under a street light, but heavy rain was falling at the time and visibility was not too good. When the Impact came Mr. Verry, Mr. Reid, Mrs. Reid, and Miss Reid were thrown on to the roadway. After striking the car a glancing blow and knocking it sideways, the lorry mounted the footpath and crashed through the window of a shop, coming to a standstill w'ith tbe bonnet and front wheels inside tbe window. A veranda post was carried away and two large glass partitions at the back of the window were hurled across the shop. The remaining veranda posts were bent and the roof was left in a badly crumpled condition. The lorry was driven by Air. S. G. McKay, of Morris Street, wbo was returning from Wellington and proceeding in tbe direction of Napier. The shop is owned by Mrs. McKnigbt, of Allison.
