BURNING BUSH
Wanganui’s Water Reserve Swept RAETIHI SMOKE PALL Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, December 14. Reports from Raetihi state , that there are bush fires to the north and east, and clouds of smoke are drifting over the town. From Ahuiti and Waitahinga, it is reported that 20 acres of fern and scrub are blazing furiously in Okehu, the water works reserve, which supplies Wanganui with water. They have assumed serious proportions, and at 11.48 to-night the Waitahinga telegraph bureau reported that several farm houses surrounded by trees were in danger. For miles around the water works was a blackened waste, where previously there had been valuable fir plantations and bush sections. The fire has burnt up to within two or three chains of the house at the water works, and was still raging over the ridges toward the Waitotara Valley-
From Wanganui the northern sky reflected a great reel glow from the burning bush at Okehu.
