’FLU PREVALENT

Mild Seasonal Epidemic NEED FOR CARE Departmental Advice Wellington, in common with other parts of the Dominion, Is experiencing a mild epidemic of seasonal Influenza, and though there is no need for alarm caution is called for at the appearance of the symptoms of the complaint. Influenza is usually prevalent at this time of the year, but on this occasion there seems to be more of the gastric type about than usual.' In view of the prevalence of the complaint, the Health Department Issued a statement last evening setting out precautionary measures. Influenza, which begins like a cold, is a highly Infectious disease, and the avoidance of Infection is difficult. There are, however, certain precautions which if taken should reduce the liability both of acquiring and spreading the infection. The department states that at the first feeling of Illness or rise of temperature the patient should go to bed, keep warm and seek medical treatment. Relapses and complications (pneumonia is a frequent complication) are much less likely to occur if the patient goes to bed at once and remains there until all fever has gone. Chill and over-exertion during convalescence should be avoided. Anything in the nature of crowding should also be avoided if possible. As a preventive measure the use of gargle and nose douche twice daily is recommended. The department points out that no drug has yet been proved to have any specific effect on influenza, though some may be useful in guiding 'its course and mitigating its svmptoms. The patient’s recovery should be fully established before he returns to work.

“Influenza is not a disease to be trifled with,” concludes the statement. “Early care means safety, because complications are thus avoided. Sunshine and fresh, warm air, when allowed by nature, are the best tonics. Adequate care is essential to avoid relapse.”
