DAVIS CUP TENNIS
New Scheme Advocated TWO NEW ZONES - By Telegraph—Press Association Auckland, September 4. The tennis player, Norman Brookes, is passing through Auckland after visiting the East. He said he discussed with Mr. Dwight Davis, the donor of the Davis Cup, a scheme to create two new zones in the contest, a north-eastern zone to include Japan, China, the Philippines, India, Siam, Java, and a south-eastern zone, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.
Mr. Davis favoured it, Japan had promised support, and Mr. Brookes asked for New Zealand’s co-operation. The scheme would save time and money, and greatly increase the local interest. Mr. Brookes also discussed the matter of the holding of open championships, with professionals competing, as in open golf championships. He said he saw no earthly reason why open tennis championships should not be held. He informed his interviewer that a Japanese team would visit Australia at the end of the year, and said that Australia’s chances in the next Davis Cup contest were very good.
