SURGICAL PRACTICE

Diagnosis and Treatment. AUCKLAND CONFERENCE Dominion Special Service. Auckland, September 4. New Zealand Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons are holding their annual meeting in Auckland, under the chairmanship of Sir Carrick Robertson. In addition to the ordinary business meeting, a full programme of work is being carried out, including demonstrations of methods of diagnosis and treatment in all branches of surgical work by the Auckland members. The pathologist and radiologists of the Auckland Hospital have provided interesting collections of material for use in demonstrations on the scientific side of the proceedings. The college was founded in Dunedin in 1927, and the late Sir George Syme was the first president. Associated with him as vice-presidents were Sir Louis Barnett and Sir Alexander MacCqrmick. Close co-operation with the Royal College of Surgeons of England has been maintained from the'inception, and the senior body forwarded an appreciative address. In December last the King approved the prefix “Royal” to the title of the college, and the College of Heralds made a grant of armorial bearings, crest, supporters and motto. The English college has presented a mace similar to the one used by the college in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. It is to be presented personally next March by Mr. C. N. Fagge, a surgeon attached to Guy’s Hospital, and a vicepresident of the English college. One of the objects of the college is the cultivation and maintenance of the highest principles of surgical practice and ethics. Arrangements for post-graduate surgical training and the improvement of hospitals and hospital methods come wit'hin its scope. A journal devoted to surgery is published, and research work is promoted. Conferences of Australian and New Zealand surgeons for scientific discussions and practical demonstrations arc held periodically. Sir Donald McGavin is the New Zealand secretary.
