UGLY RIOT IN GAOL
Mob Sets Buildings Alight USE FOR MACHINE-GUNS Barcelona, September 2. Communist convicts in a Barcelona prison precipitated a remarkable riot which culminated in their setting fire to the premises. While the Commissioner and other officials were visiting the gaol In an endeavour to end a hunger strike begun last week, a large group of convicts without warning surrounded the officials, while 500 others gathered in the courtyard. Some broke into the infirmary and returned with supplies of petrol and furniture from the warders’ apartments, which they set afire. They then fired the printing shop and storage rooms.
Mounted machine-gun sections hurriedly arrived and overwhelmed the prisoners before they had time to erect barricades. Brigades quelled the blaze.
