BODIES IN A TUNNEL

Widow and Three Children “BLUEBEARD” IN VIRGINIA Vancouver, August 29. A mob of would-be lynchers tried to seize Cornelius Pierson, 45, who was lodged in gaol at Clarksburg, West Virginia, for the murder of a widow named Eicher and her three children. Pierson conducted a matrimonial agency. The widow arrived in May and disappeared in June with her children.

The police found the bodies in a tunnel under a concrete garage, from which a trapdoor led to the tunnel. The body of an unidentified woman, found later, is believed to have been that of another widow whom Pierson entrapped and killed after getting her money. The Eicher family victims were slaughtered with an axe.
