FIRST SCOUT GROUP
Celebrating a Birthday A successful evening was held in the Moera Hall recently, the occasion being the .first birthday of the Moera Cub Pack. There was a large gathering of parents and among the visitors were Mrs. W. Nash, wife of the group president; Mr. R. Nelson, district commissioner; Mr. Brown, district chairman; Mr. McKenzie, district scoutmaster; Mrs. Hoggard, district cubmaster; Mr. Clarke, district rover scout leader; Mr.'Zambra; Mr. J. W. Bugg, C.M., Petone; Miss Reid, C.M., Petone; Mr. Reid A.S.H., Petone; Mr. Forrest, A.C.M., Moera; Mrs. Fraser, brown owl; Miss McFarlane, tawny owl; Mr. Nicholls, S.M., Moera.
_ Apologies were received from Mr. W. Nash, M.P., president of the group committee ; Sir Alexander Roberts, patron of the group committee; Sir Alfred Robin, honorary metropolitan commissioner : Mr Amos, metropolitan commissioner; Mr. F. Campbell, vice-president; Miss Sealey, district commissioner, girl guides; the Ven. Archdeacon Hansell. The evening’s programme consisted of a series of jungle dances, camp fire songs, investiture of tenderpads, presentation of service stars, and two cubs, T. King and D. Preston, received their second stars. The last item was a play entitled “Wolf Cubs to the Rescue.” The supper tabic was suitably decorated in blue and gold —the group colours—and was laden with good things. The birthday cake was a gift to the cubs aud was artistically iced.
The district chairman, Mr. Brown, presided at. the table, and speeches were given by Mr. Hoggard, district cubmaster, and Mr. Nelson, district commissioner. Both speakers reminded the cubs of their motto, “D. 0.8. (“Do Our Best”), and wished them "Many happy returns of the day.” Mr. Brown then called on T. King to light, the first candle; after that ho asked Mrs. Nash to cut the cake. After the supper the cubs, gave the “Grand Howl,” and th? singing of the National Anthem brought the evening to a close.
