MINERS’ BOYCOTT

No Coal for Cement Co. HIKURANGI HOLD-UP Union’s Threatened Action By Telegraph—Press Association. Whangarci, August 31. A meeting of the Hikurangi Miners’ Union yesterday discussed the situation arising from the order given by Wilson’s (New Zealand) Portland Cement Company to the Hikurangi Coal Company for 500 tons of coal a week. The manager of the Hikurangi Company said the order would, have to be filled if the mine was to continue working. The meeting thereupon decided that no unionist be allowed to supply coal to the cement company; and that the employees of the Hikurangi Company’s mine should strike.

This morning word was received that this had been given effect to, none except emergency men appearing at the mine.

Asked whether the National Council would step in if Wilson’s placed orders with mines outside the Hikurangi district, a high official of the union gave an impression in the affirmative. The official admitted the possibility of the Government reserve of coal at Wellington being made available to the cement company. He added that the union was awaiting developments in this connection. * \
