TAXATION BURDEN “It is proposed by the Government to impose further taxation, and, if this is done, the Government will defeat its own object by, causing fresh burdens to be thrown on industry, which will lt£ curtailed, and private enterprise will .be brough to a standstill,” said Mr. Albert Spencer in his presidential address at th® annual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Employers’ Association last week. Mr. Spencer added: “The evils of the present high taxation and the uncertainty in regard to further increases are having a disturbing effect on the general community. The higher the taxation the less work there is for th<j unemployed.”

Cottage Garden Competition. A cottage garden competition is to be inaugurated by the Wellington South Horticultural Society. Special prizes have been donated. Gardens will be inspected at least three. times during the season, and points will be awarded at each inspection. Remand Granted. Charged in the. Police Court on Saturday with unlawfully converting a motorcar to their own use at Hamilton. Eric George Pocock, fruit-packer, aged 24, and Harold Leonard Dick, fellmonger. aged 20. were remanded to appear to-morrow. Wounded On Head. Alleged to have been hit with a hottie in Herbert Street about 10 p.m. on Saturday, L. Dockery, Rugby Street, garage proprietor, was admitted to the Wellington Hospital suffering from a lacerated wound on the scalp and concussion. He was conveyed there by the Free Ambulance. Motor-cars Collide. As a result of a collision between two motor-cars at the corner of Endeavour Street and Onepu Road, Lyall Bay, about 3.30 on Saturday afternoon, David Lewis. 33 Queen’s Drive, suffered a severe lacerated wound to his right hand. He was taken to the hospital by the Free Ambulance.

Broken Leg. Motor-ear and motor-cycle hit one another near the junction of the Newlands Road and the Ngahauranga Gorge Road about 7.30 a.m. on Saturday. Leonard Brook, painter’s apprentice, Bassett; Road, Johnsonville, who was riding the cycle, had his right leg fractured, and also suffered concussion. He was taken to the hospital by the Free Ambulance.

Rugby Referee Injured. \ During the senior Rugby match between Carterton and Old Boys at Carterton on Saturday, says a “Dominion” Special Service message, the referee was obliged to leave the field, and be replaced. The referee. Mr. C. Blake, in endeavouring to avert colliding with a player, twisted his knee. Play was held up, and the ambulance men called on to the field. Mr. Blake was unable to continue, and off the field, while Mr. H. J. McKenzie, who Was acting as a line umpire, donned the injured man’s jersey and took the whistle.

Flying Squads for Fanns. Assistance for farmers by forming unemployed men into gangs which could be kept moving at frequent periods, was proposed by Mr. Albert Spencer in his presidential address at the annual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Employers’ Association last week. Mr. Spencer Suggested that teams of about 15 men. under a foreman, could establish camps and attend to the cleaning up of adjoining farms. Work which farmers would be unable to undertake under ordinary farm routine would thus be done promptly, and the gangs could then move on to other properties.
