DEBATE AT PARAPARAUMU
Four members of the Victoria University Debating Club recently visited the Paraparaumu Social and Debating Club, and took leading parts in a debate on the subject "That action for breach of promise be abolished.” The club president. Mr. A. Hardham, occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of residents. Mr. Hurley led for the affirmative, being seconded by Mr. Rollings. Mr. Bannister leading, and Mr, Crossley seconding for the negative. Both sides presented their case in spirited and well-reasoned speeches, with many passages of humour. The debate was open to members of tho club, -Messrs. Reeve. Beckett, and Maclean supporting the affirmative, and Mrs. Kelso the negative.
Mr. Bannister vigorously replied jn support of his sidy, but Mr. Hurley’s masterly and snccessfulsummlng up carried a majority of the votes. A vote of thanks was «nccorded the visitors, and a challenge accepted to meet the club in debate at a future date. Supper was supplied bv the women members.
