Ngaio v. Working Men’s Club The annual match between the Ngaio and Working Men's Club teams was played at Ngaio on Saturday evening, when the local club won an exciting contest by one game. The losers gained a point In the Wellington League’s A grade teams tourney by making the higher score at the first six boards. The Ngaio club, on the other hand, notched a point in the B grade contest by scoring 3J to the Working Men’s ’Club’s 2} at the next six boards (7 to 12 inclusive). The match totaj was: Ngaio 6}, W.M. Brooker, president. who referred to the valued help that the Working Men’s Club has given to the New Zealand Chess Association and the Wellington Chess League on several occasions. Mr. F. K. Keiling expressed the thanks of the city players to the Ngaio Club for a most enjoyable evening, and to Mesdames Brooker and E. E. Hicks and Miss Brooker, the ladies who were in charge of the supper tables. Of the nineteen matches played to date, the Working Men's Club has won nine, the Ngaio Club has won eight, and two have ended in a tie. Tourney at Hostel. A dozen residents at Donbank- Hostel entered for a chess tourney which was completed last week, the leading scores being as follow:—®. Crawford, 18; F. W. Fry. 18; M. Johnston. 14; M. Willis, 12; S. Wheeler, 10: E. Willetts, 9; R. C. Howatson. 9; and F. Cowan, 9. The play-off, which consisted of three games, ended in favour of R. Crawford (2—l). who therefore has custody of the club's Staunton set and inlnid board for the ensuing twelve months. The second prize, donated by the Wellington Chess League, goes to 11. W. Fry. After the prizes wefe presented on Friday evening, a dozen members took part in a simultaneous display given by Mr. A. W. Gyles, the Dominion champion, who succeeded In defeating all his opponents.
