THREE-POINT LEAD

Hawke’s Bay Defeats Manawhenua LOST OPPORTUNITIES By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, August 29. In a game which was fast in the first spell, but which lost a great deal of interest in the second half, the Hawke's Bay representative footballers defeated Manawhenua by 13 points to 10 to-day. Hardness of ground made conditions bad for Rugby. Hawke’s Bay’s recent tour put many of the best players on the injured list, and the team that took the field against Manawhenua was not as strong as usual. The first half opened at a good pace, Manawhenua immediately rushing play to the Bay line. A complete reversal took place when Kihi took advantage of a good opening to passing to Smith, who scored behind the posts for Setford to convert. Mishandling among the Manawhenua backs spoiled a few good opportunities. Shortly after, from a scrum about midfield, Lambie sent to Setford, who cut in and sent to E. Ruru, who scored under the posts. Setford succeeded with the kick. Play continued in the same vein for some time, but Manawhenua rushed the ball to Bay’s line where, after a series of scrambles Elliott scored well out Roddick converted, making the score. Hawke’s Bay 13, Manawhenua 5. Score was unaltered at half-time. In the second spell Smith and Fitzgibbon (Bay), Graham and Winiata (Manawhenua) retired injured, and were replaced, Manawhenua was aggressive for a time after resumption, Bay finding relief by forcing on two occasions. When Bay eventually broke-away it was awarded a free kick in front of the posts, on the twenty-five Setford succeeding. Just on the call of time the Manawhenua forwards secured the ball from midfield, and Ball finally sent to Elliott, who rushed over to score, just out from the posts. Satherly converted, making the final score: Bay 13, Manawhenua 10. BUSH SEASON ENDS Championship to Hamua By Telegraph—Press Association, Fahlatua, August 29.
