EASTBOURNE BUSINESS

Town Clerk’s Report The town clerk, Mr. C. L. Bishop, reporting to the Eastbourne Borough Council last night, stated that during May the outside staff had, along with the unemployed relief workers, been engaged on the extension of the sea front concrete wall, which now reached to the southern end of the Recreation Grounds. Expenditure from April 1 to May 31 had been above normal, mainly through legal expenses, amounting to £79/3/8, Incurred in connection with rate collections for the past year, and £668 spent on unemployment relief works. Water and Drainage. “The bore recently put down for artesian water has been tested, and found to be yielding approximately 15,000 gallons of water in 24 hours,” he continued. “This, in itself, is of little use. Personally, I am of the opinion that the council has spent enough money in experimenting, and it is now time that some definite decision was arrived at. Pircs in Borough. "The recent fire on the hillside at Muritai was presumably the result of some person burning refuse in a nearby section. It Is the intention in future to prosecute any person lighting an outside fire without first having obtained the necessary permit. Omnibus Department. “For May the revenue in the bus department again fell by £2OO, and for the two months to May 31, a total decrease of £320 Is shown. The falling-off in revenue to some degree may have been due to the overhaul of ferry boats taking place, as numbers of people took advantage of the cheaper fares on the boat-bus trips. There Is no doubt, however, that the main fallingoff Is in casual traffic, particularly on Sundays and public holidays. Expenditure is being kept down to an absolute minimum. Ferry Department. “Ferry department revenue fell by £B6 for May, making a total falling-off of £260 for the two months to the end of May. Expenditure has been very closely watched, and is £l5O lower than for the same period last year. The overhaul of boats has been completed, and I .think that when the figures ■ are available, It will be shown to have cost less than last year. “The traffic on Sundays of late has not justified the running of the service during the winter months.”
