Honour for Miss Smythson The fortnightly meeting of the Cercle Francois de Wellington was held last week at the Pioneer Club rooms, when a most interesting programme had been arranged by Mme. de Filippi. Mme, Finlayson received. Messrs. Maunder and Trevor Fisher presented a bracket for violin and piano which was greatly appreciated, as was also the piano solo by Mr, Trevor Fisher who, as be is about to leave for the Continent to further his musical studies, was the subject of many good wishes on behalf of the cercle from the president. Mr. F. F. Miles. Mme. de Filippi gave a talk on “Fairyland after Perrault,” illustrated bv extracts from Perrault's fairy tales. The climax of the evening was a brief idyllic play in verse. “A Night at an Inn,” by Gabriel Nigond. which was suitably introduced by M. Bouillet, O.A. The role of Marquise de Fcrcy was ably filled by Mme. de Filippi; Miss Coralie Smythson made a charming young son. Uchain de Ferey, and the Baron de Combreaux, who is all unwittingly the voice from the past, was well played ,by Mrs. Green, Miss Mary Cooley presented Mlle. Quinnault with her accustomed touch, and Claudette was adequately played by Miss K. Hursthpuse. A feature of the evening was the conprfttulatory speech by the president to Miss Smythson, who has been accorded the honour of receiving the Palmes Academiques from the French Academy as a recognition of the very flue work she has carr’ed on for so long. The “Marseillaise” brought to a close a most enjoyable evening. The Pulitzer awards for 1931 were announced recently.
