FELLOWS OF N.Z. INSTITUTE

Methods of Election The annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute yesterday discussed the methods of election of Fellows of the Institute. A special committee reported as follows (1) That Fellows of the New Zealand Institute constitute the National Research Council. (2) That the election to fellowships be in two groups (a) Pliysics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, geo-physics, meteorology: (b) biology, geology, medicine, and all other sciences. (3) That two Fellows from each group be elected each year until the total number of Fellows is 50. (4) That the committee recommends that the New Zealand Institute impress upon the Government the necessity for obtaining the best scientific advice on all questions of policy. It was decided that one Fellow from each group he elected until the number reached fifty.

Election of Officers.

The election of officers resulted as follows: —-President, Professor 11. W. Segar, M.A.; vice-president, Mr. B. C. Aston; lion, treasurer, Mr. M. A. Eliott; lion, editor and librarian, Dr. D. -M. Y. Somerville; lion, managers of trust accounts, Messrs. Eliott and Aston; representative on Tongariro Park Board anil Horticultural Board, Mr. B. C. Aston: representative on Great Barrier Reef Committee, Mr. W. R. B. Oliver; Wild Life Council. Dr. Cockayne and Professor Kirk; Research Grant Committee (reappointed); Hector Memorial Committee (subject, ethnology), Messrs. Elsdon Bost, W. 11. Skinner, and W. R. B. Oliver; library committee (reappointed) ; finance committee, Dr. Marsden, Mr. M A. Eliott, Dr. Cockayne, Professor Segar, and Mr. B. C. Aston; Sidey Award Committee, Professor llercus, Ensterlield, and Dr. Marsden: delegate to British Association, Dr. Sonimerville; International Research Council delegate, Sir Richard Glazebrook.
