Unemployment

Sir,—With the number of unemployed in New Zealand about 40,000, does it not seem absurd that farmers .with land of their own should be employed by local bodies and private individuals to do their work, instead of working on their own land and making it more productive? It would be interesting to know how many farmers throughout the country with 10 acres of land or more are working for others instead of on their own land. Judging by the number in this district alone, I should say it would be some thousands. Some of those farmers have more work on their own land than they can do themselves and should be employing labour instead of working for others. If these farmers were to work on their own land and enabled unemployed to take their places working for local authorities and private owners, it would not only help to relieve unemployment considerably but would also increase production.—l am, etc..
