TAXI-DRIVER CONVICTED

Auckland, May 7.
A case in which John Lewis Gunning, a taxi-driver, was charged with attempted arson at Mr. W. S. Miller’s drapery shop in Dominion Road in the. early hours of March 15. was concluded in the Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Herdman to-day. , t , Evidence was given that accused yas in the vicinity of the fire on the night in question. The fire brigade noticed a strong smell of methylated spirits at the scene of the fire. Accused said he was at home on the night qf the fire and his wife corroborated his evidence. , ... The jury found accused guilty, adding that he had been influenced by some person or persons. Sentence was deferred.
