MEMBERS’ RECORDS A record of considerable public service is held by the members of the newlyelected Wellington Hospital Board. Dr. R. Campbell Begg, M.C., M.A., M.Sc., M.D., was born in Dunedin in 1886, and received his early education there. He was in charge of the Far Eastern Rand group of hospitals of the Consolidated Goldfields, Ltd., Johannesburg, from 1912 to 1914, and was on active service from September, 1914, till 1919. A resident of Wellington since 1919, Dr. Begg has served for nine years on the honorary surgical staff of the hospital.

Mr. F. Castle has been a resident of the Wellington district for over forty years. He was president of the New Zealand Pharmaceutical Society for fourteen years, and chairman of the Silverstream School Committee for three years. This month he will complete eighteen years’ service as member of the Hospital Board, and has been chairman for eight years. He has been a member of all the board's standing committees.

Mr. C. M. Luke was a member of the Legislative Council for seven years, and was Mayor of Wellington in 1884-85. He has been a member of the Hospital Board for over forty years, having been elected first in 1885. He has been on the Education Board, the Technical School Board, and the Harbour Board. He was president of the Central Chamber of Commerce for some years, as well as a member of the council of the Chamber of Commerce. He has been president and member of the Manufacturers’ and Industrial Association.

Mr. A. T. Markman was formerly secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, a position he relinquished about four years ago to become New Zealand business manager of the Pacific Cable Board. He entered the Telegraph Cable Board. During his earlier postal career he was elected by the officers as their representative on the Superannuation Board, and was subsequently a member qf the Government Tenders Board. During 1924 he represented New Zealand at the Postal Congress at Stockholm. He has served as an elected member of the Chamber of Commerce and is at present a member of the central executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce.

Mr. G. J. Petherick has been a member of the Hospital Board for the past 18 years and chairman of the social welfare committee for 17 years. He has been a trustee of .the Home for the Aged Needy for 16 years, and chairman of the trust for the past nine years. Mr. Petherick has been a member of the Wellington Licensing Bench for 30 years. He has been a member of the Good Templar Order for many years, and for 20 years was secretary of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand.

Dr. D. Macdonald Wilson was born in Wellington in 1889, and is the son of the late Mr. George Wilson, of the firm of Messrs. Aitken, Wilson and Co. After being educated at Clyde Quay School and Wellington College he proceeded to Edinburgh University, where he studied medicine. In 1914 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and saw service in France and Mesopotamia. Returning to New Zealand, he was for three years medical superintendent of the Invercargill Hospital, leaving there to take up a similar position in the Wellington Hospital, where he was in charge for six years. He resigned his position in 1928 to take up private practice. Mr. I. Van Staveren, eldest son of the late Rabbi Van Staveren, was born in Wellington, and educated at Wellington College. He has always taken a keen interest in humanitarian work.

Mrs. A. McVicar has been a member of the Board for the past sixteen years. She occupied a seat on the City Council for six years, and has been magistrate's associate at the Children’s Court since its inception.

Mr,. Walter Cole served on Social Welfare and Fees Committees of the Hospital Board from 1923 to 1924. Since his reappointment 14 months ago, he has served on the Fees, Building, Dental and General Committees.

Mrs. J. Fraser has been a member of the Board for six years. She has acted as associate on the Children’s Court for some four years; is an official visitor to the Porirua Mental Hospital, and a member of the Eugenics Board. She is the wife of Mr. P. Fraser, M.P.

Mr. J. C. Riddell lias been actively connected with social and charitable organisations for some years past, and has also taken a keen interest in the cauke of education.

Mrs. J. K. Preston has been a member of the board for the past four years, all of which have been spent on the Social Welfare Committee. For thirty years past she has been connected with the St. John’s Association. She is a member of the Board of Control of the Returned Soldiers’ Hostel, and is also on the Censorship Appeal Board.

Mrs. E. M. Chapman has been a member of the board for the past two years. For many years past she has been actively engaged in Phinket Society and Red Cross work.

Mr. J. Glover has had a lengthy experience of local body administration. He has served on the City Council for three years, and on the Hospital Board for six years. The first secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party, he also held the secretaryship of the Federation of Labour for many years. lie is manager of the "New Zealand Worker” Printing and Publishing Company. HARBOUR BOARD Experience in administration marks' the public record of members of the new Harbour Board. Captain F. A. Maeindoe is a master mariner, who has been ashore for some years. At present he is secretary of the New Zealand Merchant Service Guild. As a resident of Wellington lie has taken a live interest in municipal affairs, and he lias played a prominent part in educational matters. He has been a member of the board for the past four years. Mr. C. J. B. Norwood is an' ex-Mayor of Wellington, and has been in public office for the last fourteen years. As a city councillor Mr. Norwood put forward proposals for improvement in the city milk supply, which, with little amendment, formed the basis of the present successful system. As Mayor he was responsible for the institution of the Fire Board, and later for the successful city ambulance service. He has been a member of the Harbour Board for thirteen years, and is president, of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. G. A. Troup inis been Mayor of the City for tlie past, four years. lie was returned ns a city councillor six years ago. mar the head of the poll, and was elected Mayor'in 1927. Prior to his election as Mayor Mr. Troup had important business interests in the city, being closely associated with various commercial organisations. He is president of the Boys’ Institute, which office he has held for almost thirty years, and is a member of the Macarthy Trust Board.

Mr. 11. D. Bennett has served as de-puty-chairman and member of the Harbour Board, and was a member of the City Council for many years. His council service included tlie chairmanship of the works committee. Mr. Bennett is chairman of the War Memorial Carillon Society. and is an ex-member of the Fire Board.
