CIVIC ELECTIONS

Heavy Informal Vote

NUMEROUS DECLARATIONS Ten Days for Recount The completed first count of the votes cast in the City Council election on Wednesday gives the figures set out below. They are somewhat different from those published yesterday, but the relative posttion of the candidates arc practically untbThere are, however, 3245 informal votes to be scrutinised, and several hundred declaration votes to be dealt with. It is possible that these may affect the positions of Messrs. Wallace, McDonald and Mitchell (the only retiring councillor not elected on the figures given). ; The recount will take about ten days. The asterisk indicates those who were members of the old council. The letter “0” against a name indicates Civic League nominee; “R,” Ratepayers Association; “C.R.,” Civic League and Rate : payers’ Association ; “L., Labour; 1., Independent. Appleton, W. J. Mo< CHECKING THE COUNT Swearing-in Ceremony NOT FOR SOME WEEKS It will probably be toward the end of the month before the new Mayor and City Council are sworn-in. The reason for this .is mainly statutory. First of all a recount of the whole of the votes polled in Wednesday’s elections has to be made. This is done carefully and deliberately, and though the work was commenced yesterday, it will probably be a week before the result of the mayoral and City Council elections is known. The mayoral count will be undertaken right away, and will be the first issue to be finally declared. / It is possible that the recount off the council may take ten days. After it is known the result of the poll will be officially declared by advertisement. The swearing-in will take place a week after the declaration of the poll. NEW CITY COUNCIL , Mr. Mitchell’s Congratulations A tribute to the newly-elected City Council is paid by Mr. G. Mitchell, a member of the former council, who scored most votes of the unsuccessful candidates. He writes:—“I think a very good council has been elected, and I congratulate them, especially my old colleagues, who have given such excellent service to the city. Electors are rightly masters of all public men, and we must cheerfully accept their decision; and in sporting spirit I accept it. If they desire my services at any future time, I will always be found willing and ready to serve. During times of prosperity and large works, organisations and staffs are apt to grow unduly, and have to be reviewed and brought into line; in times of depression and with various savings that can be made, there will be no difficulty in giving considerable relief to ratepayers. I am sure my old colleagues will be found leaders in (the spirit of economy suitable to the times. I wish the Mayor and council a very successful term of office.”
