.Mr. Nevlll Sniitli. an Austrulian, who tor some years was u popular teacher of Hinging in Canterbury, and who has since won his spurs as a landscape painter, has an attractive show of water colours at Eaton s Gallery. His scenes in Old Mexico and Arizona glow with light and colour anil the fantastic vegetation of those districts is handled so skilfully ns to bring out its decorative qualities to the full. Hie picturesque buildings of Old Mexico, ranging from dignified cathedrals to quaint thatched colleges and barns, are strongly and faithfully recorded. The artist's water is liquid and liis rocks are as real and rugged as the originals. Softer and daintier, but equally sympathetic, is ills tender treatment of the atmosphere of the Pacific Islands. From picturesque countries he mis chosen views that compose well, and ne achieves the peculiar atmosphere of each with verve and versatility.
