WORK HELD UP
Palmerston Central School
PARENTS VOICE PROTEST Dominion Special Service Palmerston North, May 6. “Where is the trouble? The Minister says he has authorised the work, but’ nothing is being done,” declared a parent at a meeting of parents and the committee of the Central School last night. “The Technical School was evacuated after the Central School and the work has started there. It is the same trouble again; we are the Cinderellas and the primary schools are pushed on one side. It is up to the parents to hold an indignation week and keep the children away from school. The sanitary arrangements in one temporary school are atrocious and the ventilation dreadful. The parents do not realise what they are laying their children open to." Later, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., who was present, said that it was wrong to say that work had been commenced on the Technical School. He had interviewed the Minister in Wellington and had pointed out to him the position and the inconvenience to everyone. -Mr. Nash said that he had stressed the fact that it was not fair to the headmaster, the teachers and the pupils to be. housed in different buildings. Mr. Nash said that he would forward a telegram in the morning to the Minister asking for a definite answer and urging that something should be done immediately. " The chairman of the committee, Rev. J. D. McArthur, said that the parents of children were perturbed with the winter months ahead, particularly about the children located in one particular building. ,
REVERSED DECISION
Hastings Protests Strongly
Dominion Special Service. Hastings, May 5.
In spite of the very definite declarations mlide by him during his recent visit of insnection to the Hastings High School, the Minister of Education, Hon. H. Atmore, now proposes that the top story in the main wing of the building be restored with other materials, and |hat the new classrooms be not built. The decision has called forth a vigorous protest from the High School Board, and the secretary has written stating that unless an assurance is given by Friday next, the date of the next board meeting, that the rooms which are regarded as dangerous will not'be used as classrooms, and that the erection of tire three new classrooms is to be proceeded with, the board will have no alternative but to call a meeting of parents and the public to enter a strong protest to the department’s proposed action.
