GIRL’S DEATH

Thrown from Pillion

NEGLIGENCE ALLEGED

Rider of Cycle Charged

Dominion Special Service

New Plymouth, May 6.

The unusual case of a young man being required to answer a Supreme Court charge of riding a motor-cycle negligently so as to cause the death of the girl who was riding behind him was heard In the Magistrate’s Court simultaneously with the inquest into the death of Elsie May Goldsworthy, of Fitzroy. The accident happened on March 8 last between Inglewood and New Plymouth, when deceased was riding behind the motor-cycle of Leonard Roy Augustus Irving, dairy factory employee.

Irving was proceeding behind a mo-tor-car and accelerated when the car drew to the left, thinking the movement was to allow him to pass. Instead it was to give room to a car driven by John Albert Blanchard, and coming the opposite way. A collision occurred, accused and Miss Goldsworthy being thrown to the roadway. Miss Goldsworthy died almost immediately, and Irving rceived injuries to his foot and was removed to hospital.

Irving was formally charged at the conclusion of the inquest, the coroner returning an open verdict. Accused pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail in two sums of £5O.
