SOCIAL PROGRESS
Kelburn Branch Meeting The annul meeting of the Kelburn branch of the Women’s Social Progress Movement was held at the home of Mrs. Malcolm Fraser, Rawhiti Terrace, last Wednesday, when Mrs. Dallard presided over a good attendance of members. Regret was expressed that owing to indisposition Miss McLean, C.8.E., founder of the movement and president of the central committee, was unable to bo present. Mrs. G. L. Stewart, the administrative officer of the committee, recounted the special aims of the institution, pointing out that they had in view the better education of the people with respect to the insidious nature of social evils, to the most suitable means of coping with them, and to the value of united effort in the endeavour to ensure that the present-day freedom claimed by the youth of our country shall be a safe freedom. During the course of her remarks, Mrs. Stewart mentioned that although the league was still in its infancy its growth was already vigorous, the roll of members being not less than 400. There was an address delivered on “The Youthful Summing-up of Prohibition,” by the special speaker for The afternoon, Mrs. A. Gillies, Ph.D., lute of Canada and England, and now a resident of Wellington. A vote of thanks was on the motion of Mrs. Bennett carried with ‘acclamation. The annual report presented by the president showed that the Kelburn branch was in all respects progressive. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mrs. B. L. Dallard: honorary secretary and treasurer, Miss Mary McKenzie; committee, Mesdames Fraser. Inglis, Pearson, Purdie, Tait, Taylor and Austin, During, the afternoon Miss Myra Sawyer sang two songs.
